For consumers who are unfamiliar with the materials, it can be challenging to distinguish between acrylic and organic glass based solely on their appearance. Today, we’ll introduce you to the raw materials used in both acrylic and organic glass sheets, helping you easily differentiate between these two types of materials.

PMMA plastic (also known as acrylic or polymethyl methacrylate) is often confused with polystyrene. However, PMMA is brittle and readily dissolves in organic solvents. While it serves well as a transparent material due to its excellent light transmission properties, its surface hardness is relatively low, making it susceptible to scratches. PMMA is ideally suited for manufacturing transparent insulating components as well as parts requiring moderate strength.

  Forming Performance

  1. Amorphous material with high moisture absorption, requiring drying; it is not easily decomposed, exhibits moderate flowability, and prone to issues such as poor filling, mold sticking, shrinkage, and weld lines.

  2. Use high-pressure injection, maintaining high material temperature and mold temperature under conditions that prevent defects, thereby enhancing fluidity, reducing internal stress, and improving transparency and strength. The surface of the mold's gating system should be smooth, with a large draft angle and uniform ejection. Additionally, incorporate venting channels to avoid bubble formation.

Organic glass boasts the excellent properties mentioned above, making it exceptionally versatile in its applications. Beyond its use in aircraft as cockpit canopies, windshields, and cabin windows, it is also employed for Jeep windshields and windows, skylights in large-scale buildings (designed to prevent shattering), screens for televisions and radar systems, protective covers for instruments and equipment, housings for telecommunications devices, and optical lenses used in telescopes and cameras.

A wide array of daily-use items made from acrylic glass is available, including buttons crafted from pearlescent acrylic, as well as a variety of toys and lighting fixtures that have been enhanced with the decorative appeal of colored acrylic glass, making them exceptionally attractive.

Organic glass has another remarkable application in medicine: the fabrication of artificial corneas. When the transparent cornea of the human eye becomes densely covered with opaque substances, light can no longer enter the eye. This is the cause of blindness in total corneal leukoma—a condition that cannot be treated with medication.
